Zarina was raised in Hyderabad, where she was one of the pioneers of the first women’s cricket team. She moved to Minnesota, the state that elected the first Muslim to Congress, Keith Ellison, where she has been an outspoken political and human rights activist. Zarina began her political career campaigning for Senator Paul Wellstone. She also has a background in healthcare and technology management. For the past 25 years, Zarina has worked in the healthcare industry, where she established a free health clinic, Al Shifa, that has operated for over 20 years, is the board of Advocates for Human Rights, and is a founding member of the National Democratic Muslim caucus. She developed a partnership with Minnesota’s Future Doctors organization that provides support and creates internship opportunities for the under-served students. Currently, she serves as the Director of Enterprise Program Management Office.
She is the running mate of Rebecca Otto. If the Otto/Baber ticket wins, Zarina will be the first Muslim woman in American history to hold statewide office.
