BREAKING: Emgage Announces Historic Muslim Voter Turnout in 2018 Midterm Elections

(Washington D.C., 5/20/19) – Emgage Foundation – a national nonprofit dedicated to increasing the civic participation of Muslim Americans and minority communities – announced historic results for the Muslim American voter turnout during the 2018 midterm elections. An analysis of voters who cast their ballots on November 6, 2018 showed a significant increase among registered Muslim voters in comparison to the turnout data for 2010 and 2014. Emgage analyzed turnout data, which showed a 25-point increase in registered Muslim voter turnout in Florida, Ohio, Michigan, and Virginia. In Florida, where approximately 110,000 Muslims are registered to vote, 53 percent of them voted, which is a 22-point increase from 2014. Other states also saw significant increases with the Muslim vote in Michigan increasing by 19 points and in Ohio by 29 points. In Virginia, the Muslim vote more than doubled with an increase of 31 points.

“We are absolutely thrilled by this outcome, which is the result of the hard work of our team, partner organizations, and countless supporters who never wavered from their commitment to empower under-represented communities. The Muslim community, as well as other minority groups, have been on the receiving end of cruel and misinformed demonization, in part because there is little to no price to pay for politicians who espouse those views. But these results show that Muslim Americans are listening and they are acting. We are dedicated to ensuring that this continues well into 2020 and beyond.” – Wa’el Alzayat, CEO, Emgage.

Emgage conducts extensive Get Out The Vote (GOTV) operations targeting Muslim voters in key states including Florida, Michigan, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Ohio. The organization uses a proprietary formula to identify likely Muslim voters and engages them via various initiatives including phone banks, canvassing, and distribution of voter cards. In the lead-up to the recent midterms, Emgage organizers and volunteers made thousands of calls and distributed educational pamphlets encouraging a community that historically votes below the national average to get out and vote.
