Candidate Profile: Abraham Aiyash

A Michigan native, Abraham was a member of the Hamtramck Recycling Commission, the youngest of any city commission, where he initiated a program to bring recycling into Hamtramck schools and created awareness campaigns for immigrant communities. His interest in the political scene continued at Michigan State University, where he was part of the Student Senate and co-founded a nonprofit that tackled literacy issues and education inequality. Later, he served on Representative Rose Mary Robinson’s staff, working on environmental issues and fighting back against the expansion of toxic waste sites. 

Abraham also founded the Halimah Project, an organization that mentors refugee youth and provides an educational and emotional support system. He utilized the MSA at MSU to help integrate the youth into the community.
