Candidate Profile: Ilhan Omar

Ilhan’s background fleeing the Somalian Civil War and as a refugee in Kenya inspired her path when she came to the United States. At age 14, she was a translator for the DFL, where she was drawn to grassroots movements. As a high school student, she was an organizer and coalition builder. In university, she worked as a community educator and a devoted progressive activist in the DFL party.

A Humphrey Policy Fellow and senior Policy Aide for the Minneapolis City Council Member, Ilhan has consistently been involved in supporting working families, building educational access, protecting the environment, and championing racial equity. Ilhan ran for the Minnesota House of Representatives and won, becoming the first Somali-American to do so.
